Vikinglog: Evil Orkneys Clan and Invasion against King Alfred

892 Head of clan on Deathbed, Horad has yet to decide who will rule. Hrafn was steady but now obsessed with battle and weapons and armour, grief stricken at wife's death. Alrek the Unruly has settled down and married, has several children and has become a great leader.

Thora dreamed a skull biting a crown. A bit worried. But significance related to Jarl of Orkneys.

Kings of Denmark and Norway calling for mass invasion of Britons and surrounding Islands.

Party gather travel to capitol of Norway and bring older wives for advice. Huge feast with over a thousand men gave homage to Odin and feasted. Breidr sold lots of livestock and made a killing with ship and feast food supplies of clan farm. Tried to get King to notice them at later smaller feast but failed. Met Siguard Jarl of Orkneys and agreed to accompany him. All got horses. Set sail for Orkneys with new shipmate, another Leif Stonedale a fisherman. Was loaned a horse and got some practice in. He befriended the three strange fishermen turned vikings on board Wavebiter. They told him how they worshiped the Midguard Serpent and taught him to call help from the sea (wtf?).

On Orkneys, Siguard the Jarl sent on secret mission to kill a degenerate clan while men with invasion force and were to be sent to deaths. Jarl offered to buy women and children as thralls still party wary but all old men and those able to fight must die. Locals acuse them of kidnapping youths. All concerned sounded like dishonorable work of Loki to murder ordinary families. Party split and Thora dead against till she contacted a Raven spirit and sent it to spy on Island.  It brought to her vision of cannibalistic blood rites in prehistoric barrow mound. She came from her trance obsessed with killing all so party went on mission.

Best swimmers came by shore to hold fishing boats while rest barged into house and attacked. A woman tried to throw a wax tablet in the sea chanting but was killed and tablet taken. A woman had a strange stone knife. All killed but a boy with a broken leg. Three more inside killed.

Followed trail to barrow and hear chanting. Burst in to see bloody sacrificial orgy and began slaughter. A stone disc was being worshiped opened and weird light poured through. Johan lept at it and struck it as ray seemed to wither skin into leather. He saw the god Ganetathoa and went mad. Alrek smashed the disc covering his eyes then fought crazed Johan. Everybody dog-piled Johan and tied him while he babbled from loss of 48 sanity points. He did save everyone from view of the god.

Most dead and crippled, Briedr and Alrek tried to stop Hrafn from killing the wounded and only stopped when Briedr promised to sacrifice all to Odin. Returned to Orkneys glad to have stopped cult.

On to Pictland where Siguard led 80 horsemen against 40 picts, a complete betrayal of supposed fair fight deal he promised. Some of the Wavebiter crew got in a few hits but mostly at back. Siguard encouraged men to cut off heads and ride around with heads on belts but his skull's teeth scratched him on leg. A few days later died of septic wound (true event and good to get more history in game). Chaos ensued as force split. Many went to join Danes in King Alfred's fat lands and others went to York.

Alfreds new forts and Saxon unity was a problem for Danes. Slowed advance of  the 300 ships. Wavebiter crew found a fortified monastery with St Bartholomew sign like previous ones. Thora called spirits to spy and knew monks researching sea and stars of the north. Party Found a big warship to aid them. Cut a deal and did good job of befriending Bjorn Bjornson to help. Killed some monks and took some robes. Also got a relic from monks wagon and avoided 20 horse warrior men of Wessex. Hrafns slave reluctantly betrayed his own order, was convinced less would die if he did help vikings but he cried a few times. A bit bloody but pretending to be wounded handy. While party seized gate from wessex men other vikings scaled walls and set alight stables. While most in walls went to fight fire, the gate fell and 70 more vikings stormed the front. Knights hid in the central walls while monastery burned. Alrek and Johan caught monks trying to flee with relics and stopped them joining the soldiers by hacking them to pieces. Others in library and party seized their books and charts. Aparently the order were searching the north sea for the place where the castle of the leviathan would arise soon.

Got lots of monks and many peasants hiding in walls from raiders. Got most of loot so barricaded soldiers in inner walls and returned to ships. Got a good share of loot but thralls and horses worth more than gold. Most lead heroes have a christian slave acountant ex monk. Realize weak unarmored people cannot really bother them and fighting more recklessly. Had to divide out potential concubines but they were not too fussy, but some vikings abstained.

Ship packed and set off home. Said farewell to Bjorn and he told them to come to York next year. Returned home to sell goods, recover from shock of seeing god Ganatathoa, trained up some of weakest vikings, learned some petty spells and spent time with family. Brothers agreed to split clan to Iceland hold and Norway lands which everyone thought very wise of them. More children born and Johan married a pretty girl thanks to cousin Thoras meddling in name of Freya. Alrek has seven children now including adopted. A distant kinsman died in swamp after bog iron and the fur hunt from Iceland bought in lots of money.

Apparently monk order party have been persecuting are hoping to avert the castle of the leviathan appearing so are searching sea from Iceland to Greenland to Vinland. Some texts in Hyperborean. The Stonedale clan dont really care but let monks pursue research while serving as their record keepers and loom operators. Poorest slaves given to Odin for sacrifice.

Briedr has had runes tatooed all over to make him more battle wary as reward for Odins Favour and all the sacrifices he won for Odin. Hrafn has superior armour of a nobleman, a chain shirt and mighty helmet he wears with a white wolf pelt. Thora had birth complications so getting concubine thralls for her husband as she bore two girls. Has been studying prophetic arts of a priestess. Her sister at home busy using her former monk thralls as concubines and has children to them but unmarried. Learning Rune enchanting. Poor Alrek beginning to regret having to prepare dowries for his daughters. Poor Johan recovered well as could from seeing a gods eye, his skin hardened and his mobility reduced. His marriage has brought peace to old rival clan which pleased the gods. Thorhaddr studying secret songs of the scalds of Iceland, spending time with young wife.

Hrafn ready to duel with dead wives ex husband and father of his adopted children. Accused him of killing wife he mourns for and sworn to Freya will not lie with a woman till man who took off with a concubine and shut her out in cold.

Rolling children survival and wife surviving childbirth rolls has been good, stolen from Pendragon. Land and family tables good too. Players get nice and exited. I like Vikings Indifference to the Mythos. When at Rune hero level will sack the castle of the Leviathan. Meantime York and some more exploration await.

The allegiance system in BRP Iceland is going to take a while to kick in. Odin favourin bloodletting, Thor fighting monsters and Njord favoring sailing the best. Thora matchmaking has got her Freya points but up to 8 score most need 41+ to count. RQ3 magic im using too, most have 1-3 points of spirit magic and a few have other magic skills. Throa's spirit battles are dangerous and unreliable. A few have Cthulhu mythos spells, three have Mythos scores but 6% best. Slave monks to read for you helps keep vikings lean mean sane killing machines.

My secret life as a gorrilla cowboy

Six gun gorilla

Been playing a gorilla in a cowboy game. I am only gonzo thing in setting - gritty pulp fun and fast. I am saddest ape in west because when I find a way to go straight with law and settle with nice folk they they get massacred by forces the party set off. Doomed and tragic. Trying to learn to look harmless as everybody hates me. So I take it out on people in fights and pull people off horse back and tear them in half or pop their puny skulls. People seem less impressed again! Told to dig graves for my master a funeral director Tommy Tombstone, I made post holes and stuffed corpses in by crushing them and using a mallet to speed things up. Nobody loves me or understands me.

Game on break but I tried to retire with a nice home but never happens. Was hanging with some indians killing white men till my owner Tommy killed Shamans son and we had to flee yet again. Buh puny humans! If only I could talk.

Thanks Herbie for the big time fun

Exile Island: Treasure hunt and more realty schemes

So the party ship of flashy treasure hunting sailors was in sight of Skeleton Beach. A man was waving excitedly on headland before it. Halfling with his crowman, Necromancer with her assistant and guard with Chaos Priest got in a jollyboat with 6 crew and 2nd mate. As got closer man was warning them away from beach to rough bit of rocky beach with choppy water. Halfling in his element as he is a sailor could make it. Landed and found cast away in tattered remains of clothes the Chaos Priest recognized from books in his grandparents time. Man was helpful and pleased to see them warning them about the cannibals and the undead of skeleton beach. Priest was wary so cast History spell and was blown away from shock of too much information. Man was an immortal, cursed by gods to lead a homeless life of struggle for his rudeness.

He did have habit of putting everyone down but seemed well intentioned. So party went to his house and heard his story but did not let on they knew his age. He did let it drop he knew the navigator who the party had robbed the grave of to find the treasure map. In morning went to beach and he told them dont do it. A pirate had left undead skeletons here for decades every time he left booty where x marked under beach six feet under. So as approached the dead rose so necromancer called forth more skeletons and zombies. Party tried to get to dig but huge fight escalated into chaos as fresh undead kept arising. After about 12 minutes fighting the necromancer was out of power and had summoned about 30 undead in battle. Chaos priest went deep into fight and was never harmed with all his protection spells. Alas he could not turn undead only elementals. Seventy one skeletons destroyed before party retreated. Next day did again with priestess from boat who could command dead to fight each other. A third sortie and undead depleted.

Got a few thousand loot and a minor necromancer relic worth about 10 000. Wary of taking cursed immortal with them so chaos priest blackjacked him and they put him in a barrel with caltrops. Starved him on way home.

Got on boat to head home and crew looked at them greedily so locked selves in room, refused all entry til home. Noted had sailed off course and crew tried blackmail. Necromancer threatened to cover ship in dead and torture their souls for eternity. The apologized and sailed to Shadel Port.

Once home and loot sold released immortal and talked. He was grateful but still kinda put them down. He claimed he had no idea why gods upset with him. So as he walked off, halfling hit him with a rock and stuffed him in a barrel with food and water, nailed it up and rolled it into the sea.

Necromancer went to buy a tower but heard there were cheap used ones. Bought one sight unseen for a few thousand and party went to visit. Into the forest beyond the farmlands and down a gully shrouded in mist found a thirteen story high tower with no doors or windows, some gargoyles and a gibbet. Looked at realty description - builder unknown 250 years ago. Took his kobold out from it's bag and set it off to find secret doors. Tapped with a stick and ony necromancer heard a wooden door. Could feel a door and lock but none could see it. Poked kobold finger in covered keyhole and he picked it open. An illusion of decrepit waterlog filth covered a pristine chamber.

Party fled to city to make plans and get flunkies.

d100 Dread Family Secrets

This could be used for the clan that built a haunted house or castle, or even for any wealthy characters. Good for NPCs and red herrings too. Higher the status the more horrible secrets. Adventure hooks aplenty. Could tempt with roll on table for new characters or offer them a starting magic item or higher status for a roll. Some could be secret shames, others public possibly untrue rumours. Most families in Shadelport have dodgy pasts. That's why many clans moved here from empire. Some try to blackmail clans but with most being at least a bit evil that is a dangerous act.

Sandbox Hexcrawl Gossip
A few have commented about this of late. For me sandbox better for drop in players as gives them freedom within setting to more. With my more regular games I make stories to fit characters more instead of on the fly. Marvel games is very drop in. DnD and vikings been very consistent players so more a set menu. Vikings especially as I'm using lots of products to help me. Im happy for them to do something different but will put back on the rails. When they get too good, time to raid Cthulhu's Tomb.

DnD i give players lots of freedom and have the most tables

I find set scripts break lots so goals, links and threads need to be flexible. Scenarios where party meant to lose then they luck out and win, or a hostage is taken but party slaughter kidnappers.

Planet Psychon one of my favorite hexcrawls. Random hexes with not much interaction let me play lots with every new kingdom. Early on players moved from hex to hex every few sessions but last game spent all in same hex. Fixing problem of each hex was kinda the point of game. Last years Psychon con game was a linear adventure with sandbox distractions but all got to endgame by end in a very different way. The map above was used and nobody went to sea. Several went to mountains and explored tunnels using random bunker and subworld tunnels from the psychon book

Part one meet and great then crash plane gather survivors as zero lv band members
Part two go through desert, get water from magenta hills till reach bottom of hex
Part three all have adapted to 4th lv local mutants and go kill wizard for Colossus the AI

So the desert was sandbox but funneled to same destination from same start. Im sorry nobody went to sea. I didnt expect everyone to start the Psychonian custom of tasting or eating every being they met. thats the magic of players messing with your stuff.

For gamma world I looked at map near many modules I like set and found Beaver Island in the great lakes and used as basis for sandbox. Placed several bunkers and did some tables and factions. Worked great. Escaping enemies would return to be killed by party.  I kinda like Mutant Epoch  for approach of having random room contents allowing you to replay or run again with your own maps. I dont like the scripted boxed text but a sense could use book and all could play like a giant fighting fantasy novel.

My dungeon zones i did for originally my long stairs then started using in my normal game to make quick dungeons. I got lots of use out of the early TRS monster treasure tables book and the geomorphs so these zones were attempt to make my own. Worked very well and ran my Redbrick Style for last year for most dungeons on my Exile Island setting. The gothic version proving good and have a fair way to go. Goblin Mine Zone next.

Recycling old tables is a great benefit. Adding a extra table is easy way to paint a portrait of local life and good to train creativity. Adding a dwarf feature table to my gothic zone made a great haunted Dwarf city. With a sandbox hexcrawl like a good computer game some locations are set pieces. Some set pieces are just locations with local encounters but others Some locations could be an adventure, npc or part of a quest. Whatever players don't explore needs to be recycled. It is a tragedy if they never enter hex2305 you wrote something for. Sometimes a highlighter pen is handy for used ones or a ruled line. Bur don't be afraid to move a set piece if it keeps story happening.

I guess I'm good at ad-libbing rather than rote learning so it suits me to work like this. I suspect some ppl dont quite mean same thing as me with sandbox or hexcrawl and have different problems to me. The whole universe is my dungeon. Only a problem if I'm ill or tired or distracted by cat girls during game.

Viking Log: To Iceland and Jottenhiem

Breidr the Dauntless, a handsome farmer lad - now clan head of farmlands
Thorhaddr the lame, a clumsy unlucky boy training to be a poet - now growing fame as a bard
Alrek the Unruly a strong, handsome and outspoken hunter - now chief of the Clan
Hrafn his quieter brother (player away but in the shadows) - working on being a weewolf beserker of Odin
Throa Wartooth toughest girl for miles - Unwed mother and wealthy craftwoman and warrior
and Thora the Red her sister, been learning the secrets of Freya - the party magician, healerarcher, matchmaker and holy person
Johan a new young clansman out for a good time - is one of flashiest in the clan and lives like a rich man

Im Using
RQ3 Vikings Box Set
Ravenar Saga
Mythic Iceland

Getting into being rich and privy to secrets of magic now they are not nobody teenagers.

The viking crew set off with a family, a wooden hall, ten goats for the Iceland colony of their clan. Freedom of new land and room versus the backward rural clans of Iceland. Iceland has monster haunted wilderness. Back home grudges and legal battle dog a viking at every turn.

So ship went well, Alrek shouting orders and Johan a good navigator and helmsman. Rest of party good at boating and rowing but crappy at climbing and swimming. Several ho the most heroic of crew married into Stonedale Clan. Captain is pleased at crew progress and Alrek's ability as a commander. Several party members plan to move to Iceland but those with Rich widowers for wives more reluctant. One demanded a fine house for core family members. Thorhaddr the only viking with a pretty young wife was first to volunteer to move. Has heard of Icelandic poets being of good reputation and the best export.

Alrek has made serious commitment to Thor and learning spirit magic of the cult and has begun to practice leaping over shield walls and men. Briedr has begun to learn a charm to protect his brothers. Thorhaddr learned a new magic song that makes all at a feast chummy for a day and has made several public critical performances. People who had not seen him for year or more remarked his poetry and stories and speeches are glorious. Alrek and Hrafn being poets and speakers too. Alrek an passioned leader of men and fine singer, Hrafn a good poet and able persuader of men. Hrafn wants flashy noble quality weapons and exotic bigger weapons. Party have been in mostly rural and backward places and never to a big Viking home and settlement so no go so far. Thora going mad from the things she can see but other cannot with her second sight but always has time for matchmaking. Now married with merchant husband and has commissioned him a boat. Throa Has been caring for her child she produced by sleeping with her thralls. With her famous cousins, her fearsome reputation she is left alone by suitors. Has been studying artisan and rune master secrets.

Thorhaddr has been learning read Latin from his Irish monk thrall but party burned all the Cthulhu cult holy books. Party as high status and fame yet they are still rich bumpkins. Famous as warriors, successful business men, marrying rich widows and for being of poor origins and youth. Surely they should visit somewhere flashier than local Jarls one day.

So arived at Chief Ketil's hold and were advised on lotions to move. Chose area to search that was not heavily settled. Set sale after impressing Kettil they are good guys then explored around Peninsula. Found a good site near some clifts, then saw a farmhouse but went on to a big stead of six buildings where a clan chief resided.  Alrek not savy about stuff outside of farming, sailing and killing but Thorhaddr a good adviser for his religious duties and conduct. Thora visited several steads along coast and treated medical problems of the old and lame. Heard of a big elf filled rock and visited but shy elves avoided large fierce party but Thora wished to return. Told by local area vikings are scouting is haunted by a bestial cave troll from the cliffs. Party  heard of those who came back from hunting Troll in his own domain. Vikings sailed to cliffs and best climbers got up cliffs and hauled up others and armour. Found the huge troll and managed to kill the brute ambushing him in his cave.

They built their house and fences for the first family settled in (Finn and his stonedale bride, her grandfather and her two younger siblings, plus another young couple). So after heard over mountains was a lake in a river they decided to visit. Found old shack with paranoid lonley poor old man whos family was eaten by lake serpent. Party went to ruined shack by shore of lake and inside was a great nest of straw. Thorhaddr stuck the heap with his sword and awoke the beast. A worm big enough to eat an ox and almost invulnerable. It hosed building with poison gas, with Hrafn copping a stinging gulp and Thorhaddr falling, foaming at the mouth and eyes bulging. Party laid into beast and it damaged several shields before it smashed through rotten wall and dived into lake. Party hung around a week while Thorhaddr nursed from near death by Thora. Hrafn tried using a goat as bait but monster too smart to fight party again.

Returned to the new farm steak, helped clear forest a bit and set off home to get next boatload. On the way a storm came. An unnatural terrible storm that threaten to destroy the ship. Several men hurt cutting down sail and mast that ended up breaking as a two and a half day storm herded them north. Thora with second sight saw a giant in the sky and it fired a lightning bolt from the clouds. She snapped and crawled under deck and rest tied selves to boat. Several got bad chills. Sea calmed and surrounded by fog. Thora treated the sick including herself. Her shattered mind made her fearful of supernatural everywhere. Several crewmen watching, saw shape in fog and readied bows. Winged men swooped down to grab the captain and three crew men killed incoming bird men dead and a few others lost use of their legs. Captain ducked and winged men driven off (breaking the scripted scenario called for capture). Party waited and later a run carved stick dropped from sky. Was a message claiming to be a different tribe who needed to talk. Party met them and pretty lithe young winged folk and a elder met them. Language was meaningless so runes were used even though they had some runes of their own unfamiliar to Thora.

Taken to their Island and traded irory, got some bird folk drunk and tried to seduce drunk women and failed. Made good deals and hard or great red shaggy troll beasts they used to hunt (mammoths). Set of with oars to enemy island. Party told they had taken several humans for sacrifice to the Jotun and some of the friendly tribes folk. Vikings keen to kill annoying bird folk and arrived at Island. Thora saw magical sparkles and wary. As the beached the boat and good wind warriors covered them from air and drove evil ones into their cave. Then someone saw huge sea serpent arise and gleam at the boat. Alek ordered men to keep dragging inland while heroes attacked the dread beast.

Several heroic wounds on the beast and a man eaten. The three poor fisher brother of the crew were on knees chanting in strange language. Which seemed odd. Thora realized they worshiped the great serpent! One of the three was swallowed and party hurt enough that it went to escape. They crippled its tail and dragged it back on land while heroes hacked its head off. Captain a impressive warrior inflicted several critical blows. Alrek had brilliant idea and slit beast open for two men it swallowed. Thora saved the creepy fisherman instead of the other hero she liked more but oh well.

Into cave they spotted several traps and disarmed them including a log they could use as a mast (do people carry spare masts?) One trap was a horrid life draining spirit which too Johan even thogh Thora tried to get taken instead, then cowered in terror instead. Dragged outside and the good winged man shaman saved him at cost of his own life. Thora a bit cut up about her sanity. A room ahead she saw ghosts awaiting and four sky folk let ghosts posses them while heroes poured in. Were ambushed at a steep slope but Johan climbed up quickly and Alrek leaped up with an amazing jump. Ambushers wounded. Party took on physical threats and the wind children sacrificed selves to the supernatural threats. Finally entered the great chamber and a huge aerial battle broke out with wind children. A sacrificial cage with sacrifices on a fulcrum neas a volcanic vent was ready to be dropped in so half vikings moved cage an captain cut open the cage. Alrek and Hrafn jumped up and killed many low flying evil winged men. Finally the ground was covered in limping wounded wing folk and Hrafn went into a kill frenzy. Thora tried to save some thinking them slaves but tearful good ones pleaded don't. Killed all the wicked giant worshipers and the good ones looted the treasure trinkets handing them to party. Ivory, furs and a magic necklaces. Thora grabbed them and party wary. She screamed at a magic blanket as demon ridden so they threw in volcano with the Surtur cultists corpses. Freed the four vikings and two Irish monks taken as prisoners. The lead viking told them to take the Irish as Thralls and offered them a reward if they took him home. He seemed noble.

Another party with the wind children and three vikings managed to find lovers (I will roll for offspring later). Party left to Norway and returned the leader Viking. He was a Jarl who offered them friendship and gifts. Hrafn got Ankle biter a huge bastard sword thay cuts off men's leggs and is stronger than most blades. Alrek got a composite bow from Russia. Scowled an Thora who had grabbed all the magic before.Turned out the blanket had 3 wind elementals inside a priceless relic now destroyed because of her reaction. Johan took a strength enhancing belt and Thorhaddr got a gold chalice with unicorn ivory.

Back home the party rested then made two more trips. Some party stayed in Iceland others preferred home. Rich widows harder to impress but Hrafns wife, the richest woman in the Fjiord died in Childbirth leaving him  with an infant and three adopted children and a fortune. He regretted not marrying her sooner. Rich but has family obligations. Her ex husband and Father of three kids wants a honour fight next thing. Thora had a child too. All party now more interested in religion. Hrafn learned arts of being a werewolf and fanatic fighter and instructed about Rune magic. Others picked up a bit more magic but Thora spent time in holy retreat getting over her insanity and recovering from her shock. Jotun joining sea god cult.

Next session will visit court of Norway. Hear tales of horror, learn secret arts of magic and possibly new missions. I could run them through Russia to Byzantium or Europe and Briton (or magical Canada). I have several Mythos plans and next episode of Ragvenar saga. LFP aventure i have is good too, easily convertible. Probably 2-8 sessions left before the raid on Relyeh.

d100 Monasteries & Nunneries

It's murder a monk month here at EMO! First vikings now this....

Lots of monasteries floor plans online - very handy

In my game with INT bonus=class changes possible I think monk would work well. A thief turned martial artist or a monk who turns to wizard or priest or psion or shaman. Not as good as a wizard robot but cool anyhow. Some of these sects may have other multi classed among them

Cymbal mountains are covered in monasteries from orders all over the world and man others are across the island. Some were started by cults to gain respectability others are monsters or have turned wicked. Some sects are warrior monks (as character class). Others are just cloistered peasants farming crafting and preying in segregated gender mass cult housing (zero level). Some are more like psions or shamen. And of course some are frauds pretending to be monks to hide in public.
